Daniel Searle bought Landscape with Smokestacks, a pastel by Edgar Degas, for $850,000 in 1987. Searle has allegedly refused to return the Degas. The plaintiffs allege that Searle took inadequate precutions to ensure that the 1987 seller had clear title to the work.
